1408

Me and my wife ventured out to the movies today and she made me sit through 1408 based on a story by Stephen King. I am not one for scary movies, but I must say this movie put chill bumps on my skin that stayed there until the credits started rolling. No gore porn here the director (Mikael Hafstrom ) put together a great suspenseful movie with out nudity, blood and guts (some blood but not to much) and crude language. The movie did not need it to survive. John Cusack (Michael Enslin’s in the movie) played his part to the hip, I don’t think anyone else could have masted the role as well as he did. All of the other parts in this movie were small by nature compared to John Cusack role. Samuel L Jackson’s was in the movie for all about 15min. I think. If you want to stay on the edge off your seat you must go see this movie at the theater. They did a outstanding job using the surround sound in this movie. Only one word of advice make sure you stay away from the trailer cause it will spoil on off the plot twist in this movie. That was a bummer. This is a 5 out of 5 for me. I can see myself going back to the theater for this one.

TOG out!

Remember a little while back when I told you guys about the awards going on at 360friendspot.com? Well they are over now, and we lost. And we lost by a pretty large margin, 63% to 21%, but we were up against some awesome podcasts and we seemed to edge everyone out but the great Major Nelson who just totally kicked our ass. But oh well, what can you do. So if you were one of the awesome people that voted, even if it wasn’t for us, be sure to go over there and check out how everything went down.

In the Shadows of Mainstream

Maybe it was poor marketing or bad beta participant selections? Or perhaps bad timing with all the focus on the successful Halo 3 Beta and the highly anticipated Forza 2? Regardless of the reason, the 360 now has a title that will be sadly unheeded. Shadowrun is by far the freshest idea to hit the FPS scene with compelling features that expand game-play like never before. Yet the word on the street is stay clear of this one. And I ask, why? Maybe it’s just me, but it feels like the majority of the badmouthers haven’t even played the the darn game yet.

Well I played it, and here’s what I gotta say about it.

Hardcore FPS fans must have this game in their collection. Shadowrun is not for casual gamers. With over 20 different weapon, magic and tech gadgets equippable in countless combinations among four character roles, you can create your perfect FPS personality. Weather it’s a 3 foot tall dwarf with a Rocket Launcher and Shotgun or a monstrous giant Troll with a ninja sword, the possibilities seem endless.

Former Halo fans have every reason to pick up this game. Did you hate having to re-spawn just to get slaughtered by a dual wielding jackass over and over? Well it’s not gonna happen here after mastering the unique game-play. If the only thing you like about Halo 2 multiplayer is the Party System then you are in for a treat! ‘Cause it’s back, just like you remember, with a few extra features Bungie ignored (Like voting to boot griefers out of your party).

OK, so it retails for a full 60 bucks and only returns you 9 maps and no Story mode (there is still a single player mode). The developers claim that there is no story mode because they set all their efforts to balance the multi-player. Well… it shows. All I’m asking you to do is try this game before the badmouth bandwagon picks you up. So go rent it, borrow it, there’s even a demo available on the Marketplace; just play it.

Anyone who cringes at the thought of yet another FPS release should not overlook Shadowrun. You may just discover that it can be an exciting and intense First Person Shooter game that you and your buddies can have good times with. Expect a thorough review from XBLR soon. -Rust.

Surfs Up at the Box Office!

V.S.

Last year it was Penguins that topped the Box Office for the kiddies. This year it’s Surfing. (oh and Surfing with Penguins) I have to admit it seems as if Hollywood as run out of ideas. There is Pirates3, Shrek the Third, Oceans 13, and Now the Fantastic 4-2.

The latest Superhero flic (or as I like to call it: Stan Lee’s 401 k plan) is like a Beach Boys album. It’s Seaonal and Nastalgic. It is also very entertaining. The first film had to introduce the heroes and their powers. That sometimes works: Batman Begins. But more often it doesn’t: Superman Returns. With introductions out of the way, the 4 are back for more. More action, More Powers, and More effects. All of which make no sense on the surface but come together to create a great Summer Popcorn Hit.

On the other TIDE we have Surfs Up. Think Lords of Dogtown in CGI. It’s your basic underdog story with some comical fare and Napolean Dynomite. The voice acting is superb (expecially Bridges reprising his “Big Lebowski” schtic). However the appeal for kids is only feathers deep. There isn’t much for them to get into other than an occasional “Pee” joke.

There is plenty to see at your local Cineplex this June. So wax up those boards and catch the big one to the silver screen. But if you want my opinion; 4 heads are better than 1 cold Turkey. Or is he a Rooster?
