Reasons why I'm buying a PS3

So fair enough, the Sony have been getting a lot of flak lately over the PS3 for various different reasons, but I think a lot of people are writing it off too early.

There are plenty of different reasons why the PS3 will be a more-than worthwhile investment. People just seem to be focusing on the negatives. I've compiled a list of reasons why the PS32 will be a worthy purchase. Bear in mind I plan on owning all 3 next-gen consoles (I already have an Xbox 360).

5. Storage Medium

There's no denying that Blu-Ray is by far the superior format of those used by the next-gen consoles. With a storage medium over 5 times larger than any of thier competitors, the Playstation 3 is sure to have some pretty epic games, which is good news for RPG fans everywhere. Microsoft and Nintendo are both using the Standard DVD format, which can store a maximum of 9GB on a dual layered disc. This pails in comparison to Blu-Ray's 50GB capacity. The increased storage will allow more detail to be put in the textures and models, which is perfect for the new 'HD era'.

A 50 GB Blu-Ray disc, in all it's glory.

Ever since games where on magnetic tapes, storage mediums have improved from one generation to the next. From cartridges, to CDs, to DVDs. Blu-Ray is the next logical step in that progression. Because of Sony's chosen format, the PS3 also includes a next-gen movie player and will also play DVDs and CDs. At the begining of the HD era, where more and more storage space will be required, the storage medium will be crucial and Blu-Ray has a clear advantage.

4. Controller

Whether or not you believe the idea was stolen from Nintendo, the PS3 tilt-sensing controller is bound to have a positive impact on gameplay. New aspects of gameplay will be available, without foregoing a traditional controller as Nintendo have done. How many times have you seen people tilting a controller as they play to try and help that car get around the corner? It's intuitive to make these movements and relate them to on screen actions. A tilt sensitive controller means that new players will have something that's a lot easier to get to grips with and for more season gamers, there's still the tradional control method there to use.

The new and improved 'Sixaxis' controller.

As for the rest of the controller, Sony have gone with the 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' mentality. The classic Dual Shock layout remains, which I believe is one of the most comfortable controllers ever. There have been some slight revisions to the controller, such as more trigger-like shoulder buttons and finer analogue sensitivity. The batteries are also built-in to the controller, so unlike the Xbox 360 and Wii, you won't need to buy a separate battery pack or replace the batteries every few days. Even better, they'll be wireless this time around. I personally think all the next-gen consoles have great controllers, and Sony have made some great additions to thier tried and tested Dual Shock.

3. Raw Power

The Playstation 3 will be the most powerful console of this generaion. If you haven't seen what it's capable of, in MGS4 or FFXIII you should definately check out some screenshots. The console boasts a 3.2 GHz processor, and 256MB of RAM for each the processor and the graphics processing unit. Rest assured, you'll be getting some pretty slick graphics out of the machine.

The PS3's slick PSP-style interface.

Linux will be pre-installed on the PS3 hard drive, this will allow a lot of individually made content to appear on the PS3, similar to the homebrew content that's playable on the PSP.

Izumi Kawanishi:

"Because we have plans for having Linux on board [the PS3], we also recognize Linux programming activities… Other than game studios tied to official developer licenses, we'd like to see various individuals participate in content creation for the PS3."

A full web browser will also be included, along with the Playstation Network Platform, which will allow gamers to play online for free.

2. Value for Money

Despite the price tag, the PS3 is excellent value for money. sure, the console itself is $200 more expensive, but what's inside more than makes up for that:

Xbox 360 Standard: $399.99
Gold Xbox Live Subscription: At least $49.99 (per year)
Wireless Networking Adapter: $99.99
HD-DVD: $199.99
Total: $749.96

Playstation 3 standard: $599.99
PS3 Network Platform: Free
Wireless Networking Adapter: Built-in
Blu-ray player: Built-in
Total: $599.99

Plus you're getting a more poweful console, with a hard drive 3 times the size, a tilt-sensitive controller and card readers built in. So there's no doubt that the PS3 is great value for money.

1. The Games

Metal Gear Solid 4 is bound to be a classic.

The number one reason for buying any console is obviously the games. The PS2 built up great 3rd party support for Sony, and a lot of developers will be looking to carry over thier support to the PS3. With the 360 selling approximately 4 units in Japan and the Wii covering new ground and being less reliant on hardware, the PS3 will be the number one option for many Japanese developers.

With games like Gran Turismo 5, Devil May Cry, Metal Gear Solid 4, Final Fantasy XIII, Resident Evil 5, Ridge Racer 7 and Grand Theft Auto 4 already announced, does the PS3 really need anything else?

All that jazz looks cool, but after using Xbox Live, i don't think another online experience could match it. I guess you get what you pay for; but maybe they'll offer some of the same things XBL does, being as they're playing catch up (in the online arena anyways).

this is what the person meant to say.

5.I see a number and then i see a bigger number that has 2 digits. Oh that sounds better

4. What rumble lawsuit...? No,no the motion sensing wasent a last minute idea the developers are just stupid and didnt no it was there

3. The PS3 has a slightly better procesor and some more memory. And you know its a computer right? And it can run at 120fps,thats amazing. And while that can be enjoyed to its full extent now when tv's that can refresh 120 times a second come out and our eyeballs upgrade to be able to see that fast itll look amazing.

2. Ill just ignore the fact that not everyone will buy the EXTRA HD-DVD player and that you dont HAVE to have xbox live OR a wireless adapter(espically the overpriced X360 version) and not notice how sony is trying to puch there own format on us AGAIN. Cuz if i did that my confidence that i wont be spending as much money will disspaer since the 360 will only be 400.

P.S. i cant wait for the standalone UMD player

1. Those pre renders, i mean trailers look awesome. Like come on you know the games will look exactly the same as the comapny trying to sell them says they will. With games like Generic Racer 5, Movie Game Snake 4, Final Fantasy clone 300, a bunch of other non exclusive games and ridge racer does the PS3 need anything else? Except for actual GOOD games.

Man,i love SONY. And even though i only play madden and dont have a HD-DVD and am technologically retarded im sure this thing will be great.

So yeah thats why the MGS Console 3 will be awesome

You can play that, while I rack up gamerpoints playing the much better (IMO) PGR4.

note: don't flame me for my current lack of gamerpoints on PGR3. too many games, too little time.

5 reasons I'm not buying a PS3...

1) Blu-Ray may be superior but it won't make games better IMO...

2) The launch lineup is about as boring as they come...

3) FF12 is comming out for PS2 so no telling when a new one comes out for PS3..deffinetly not launch.

4) Wow warhawk looks bad...

5) XBL is better then ANYTHING sony can come up with period.

Im gonna get a ps3, probably in the spring of next year.

Since I got a 360, the main reason will be the Blue Ray drive.

And for MGS and the next Naughty Dog games.

A really good article on why th PS3 isn't worth the hype:
http://www.time.com/time/business/article/0,8599,1560635,00.html

All those are very vaild points Steve, but I can't really agree with all of them.

The controller? Not interested in the least. Tilt controller...wow I think I'll pass.

The Games? MGS4...ok, I undertand but...

Yeah it needs games that arn't sequels...

Storage...Yeah, the hard drive I understand...but Blu-Ray Discs? Unneeded right now, in the future, by the time we ACTUALLY need 50GB of storage on a disc, the Xbox 720 will have incorporated HD-DVD with their system. And people really don't need that extra space, look at all this compression people can do now!

Value of Money?
Online will fail to compare to Xbox Live I bet you.
Subscription for Xbox Live? You don't necessarily HAVE to have it. (But it's a must-have now
Wireless networking adapter: You don't have to have it though it comes packed in with the PS3. You can always save up until you have the money to buy it. That always helps. HD-DVD? I don't have an HDTV so I don't need an HD-DVD player. Give some options. Blu-Ray player built-in...you know it's going to be shitty and I really don't care about it at ALL.
But the Hard Drive? Yeah I gotta agree with that...
And most of all, if you don't have enough money to blow off $600 packed in with all this stuff in one setting, you can just buy the Xbox 360 and a game with Xbox Live maybe and then save up till you have enough and just buy these things in small chunks.

I may be wrong about some of these things but this is coming from an unbiased gamer who just thinks the PS3 isn't worth it and this is what I think. The Xbox has treated me right so far.
