Is Something wrong with my Zune?

Posted under Microsoft, Steve519, Zune by Steven Artlip (Steve519)

So if you look back in our stories, you will notice that I posted a favorable review of Microsofts new Zune. But lately I have some issues with it. I will start off with what needs fixing and continue into how I think my Zune is actually broke. I want to know if others are having similar issues with their Zune.

What Needs Fixing.  How about the fast forwarding?  It works just fine with regular songs and such, but when you are getting into podcasts and movies, it sucks because it does not get progressively faster like almost ever other mp3 player. So if you listen to a podcast and you need to get to the end of the show, it actually takes a while. A long while. And with my iPod I would be able to hear the audio at the same time so I can try to figure out where I was in the show without having to look at the screen.  Thats not the case here too, I hear nothing while I’m fast forwarding.

Second, track tagging while your listening to the radio. When I’m listening to the radio and if there is a song I like, I should be able to tag that song so the Zune saves the artist and song title so I can later buy it in the marketplace.

Wireless downloads, we all know that.

And last of what I truly think needs improvement is saving the current location on a song. You know how with your iPod you can get half way through a podcast and maybe you need to turn it off or wanna listen to something else, when you go back to that track it will start right where you left off, for some reason it works for me in with the videos but not with audio which for me is a huge problem due to the simple fact I listen to a lot of podcasts. Another cool feature that they had is you could listen to a song through iTunes, connect your iPod and it would actually continue off where you left off and that feature again is not in the Zune.

Now let me tell you why I think my Zune is broke and why I will be returning it to where I bought it. And if you have this issue, let me know. I want to know if this is a my-Zune-only thing or if others are having this problem as well.

My Zune randomly turns off!  I know what you’re thinking, “charge your damn battery”, but that is not it. It has been fully charged and it will just turn itself off while listening to music or the radio. And when it does that sometimes it resets itself for me. I’ll get the reset screen that has the Zune logo and the progress bar on the bottom. Sometimes I actually have to wait around 5 minutes or so in order to turn it back on. Now I do not know about you guys but this is extremely annoying. What compounds this is if I was listening to a podcast, I now have to go find my spot on the current episode using the crappy fast forwarding feature.

I have also had an issue that involved the random turn off, but my Zune decided to zap me in the ear, too! I was listening to Squad XP’s podcast at the time and I do not know if maybe the Zune thought I should not listen to it due to the rampant cussing or the talk of booze and women, but it decided to turn itself off and shock me in the ear all at the same time! This time, I also could not get my Zune to reboot for at least 10-15 minutes.

So I want to know if something is wrong with my Zune. Iis this just a random crappy Zune thing or if more people are having issues with their Zune similar to mine. Let me know.

  1. Zunerama Said,

Zune really does need the ability to resume from a saved location in an audio file. It’s near the top of our firmware upgrade requests for Zune.

It does that in a limited way for video - it remembers where you left off and can pick up from there. But multiple bookmarks for longer audio files like podcasts is a high priority on our Zune wishlist.

Your random shut-off problem - I haven’t seen that problem surface on our forums, but I’ll post your story out there and see if others have experienced it.

BTW, help spread the word about this story you guys by clicking the digg this link if you could

  3. Neon Wookie Said,

Mine shuts off randomly (a couple of times its done this). Never been shocked though.

  4. Zunerama Said,

The Zune will auto-shutoff after a period of inactivity, but it ought not to happen while you’re playing music, radio, etc.

Consensus on the forum is that you have a bad unit. At least, most people are not experiencing it so we’re guessing you might have a defective player. Trade that bad boy in for another. (Sorry man, what a pain.)

  5. MrCarpalTunnel Said,

    I have a 360 I’ll trade for your ZUNE.

  6. Zune-Online.com Said,

Auto shutdown or restart: I’ve never seen it (and I hope I won’t see it) on mine or heard it from others. This is not normal and you should return your Zune.

Fast Forward: Zune has 2 speeds for FF. A slow one at the beginning and a faster later. But I agree its not fast enough for a music file more than 30 minutes.

Begin where it stopped: This is done only for the last music file you hear before you shut down your player. Not for previous ones.

I think you have a point and your comments are indeed useful for Zune. Because they are easy to solve, it can be done in the next months if the Zune team is currently bug tracking problems and requests like yours.

  7. Steve519 Said,

it does have 2 speeds but it has 2 constant speeds, it doesn’t speed up the longer you hold it down like the ipod does

and it isn’t autoshutting off due to inactivity, its doing it mid songs or radio

and I wasn’t dragging my feet when it shocked me, I as standing still, it shocked me then it turned itself off

  8. dude Said,

My zune has been having the same problem, I returned it and got another one, same problems again! I plan on getting my money back… I really do enjoy the way it handles organization and everything about it, but the random shut offs and stockings are pretty sucky.

  9. GUI J Said,

Steve Zuner or later you have to realize..its no ipod!

  10. cryochild Said,

I’ve been having the same issue with mine. I think it’s a short that shows up when using 3rd party headphones…if that makes sense. Mine only shows up when I have been listening at my desk at work for a while and then if I lean forward and create a ground with the floor. really weird. It’s been repeatable about 5 times already.

  11. JumpinJackFlak Said,

Ive also had my Zune resetting, im glad to hear that if i return it ill probably get the same results, if i found that out for myself id be mega pissed. But ive seen other websites that relate other problems such as songs skipping to things such as the brightness of the backlight, how many songs are on the playlist and if you have a background picture. im trying to figure it out myself. its really frustrating when im working and rocking out then it goes dead for a few minutes and im brought back to the realization that im at work and i just spend 250 bucks on an mp3 that isnt relaible, but hopefully there’s a solution… out there… in space… im messing with playlists and settings to see if i can find the problem.

  12. Allerun Said,

My Zune is having the same resetting problem, and I’m also using 3rd party headphones. Going to try with the stock headphones and see if that helps.

  13. Amanda Said,

my zune was perfect it worked great and when i went to turn it on last night nuthin happened .It didt turn on or even say that it had low battery if i would have know this wud happend i would of not bought this crappy zune .

  14. mao2192 Said,

I’m having the same issue unfortunately. Last night on my way home the thing rebooted … after it was finally back up, within minutes into a song the thing did it again. Sorry MS, but I’ve already got music blasting into my ears to keep me awake, no need to suddenly stop it and shock me to keep me awake on my WALK home :-P

  15. lopedog13 Said,

my zune says my wireless is on but when i check it it says that it is turned off. what should i do?

  16. Nicholas Said,

My Zune is restarting too… I sent my bug report to DCaulton at Microsoft.. there used to be a post on the Zunester blog asking for people to report problems with songs skipping and random Zune shutdowns.. it’s now been removed funnily enough.

Oh well. I guess I’ll just have to wait until firmware 1.3 and hope it fixes the problem.

  17. sgolds Said,

Add me to the list of rebooters.

I opened a ticket with MS and they said they had only seen it once before and it was a bad hard drive. They replaced my unit and … the new one does it as well. I’ve seen the issue more with the radio then with music and videos.

I’m sure that 1.3 will fix everything!

  18. nick Said,

same thing with me. happened to my first one, brought it back. happens to my new one as well. thinking of returning it for a refund and getting an ipod again. its just not worth it. :(

  19. wirecutter Said,

I’ve had my zune for about a week or so.. I think on avg it restarts about 4 times day I’ve got some nice 3rd party sony headphones I download my stuff like they want.. still restarts it can be playlists that I make or just shuffle everything on the dam thing.. shuts down at random..

but I will say this.. to this day it has never shut down while I was watching video..

I use my zune for about 7 to 8 hours a day. 5 days a week.. happens everyday.. and you never know when… thoughts??

  20. ZUNEPROBLEMS Said,

I am on my second Zune and am also seeing random shutdowns and reboots - on both of them. It normally takes around 25 seconds for the Zune logo to appear. I opened tickets with both devices, but will be returning this one and trying #3. Now, the reason I’m giving it another shot is because I just spoke with Microsoft and the guy asked me a question I found to be important. When I loaded my Zune, I did so with an internet connection on my laptop. Because of that connection, it immediately checked for updates and that brought firmware 1.2 down. The Zune is loaded with 1.0 and the CD will upgrade you to 1.1 (granted you don’t have an internet connection where it can grab 1.2). He advised me to load 1.1 on the next device and then go to 1.2. I can definitely confirm that I went from 1.0 to 1.2 on both devices. Don’t know for certain this will fix the problem, but it seems like something worth trying.

[...] When the Zune first came out I did a review on it, it was a pretty favorable review, with nothing really bad being said about it, and if your interested here is the link. But after a few weeks of owning it and screwing around with it, I started to notice a disturbing trend, it was shuting off on me for no apparent reason out of no where. I even has it shock me through the ear buds once while listening to podcasts at work, wasn’t to thrilled about that. So what I did was I wrote another post about that to see if anyone else noticed a trend like this and this was what I got. But that was the last Zune story that I have wrote and I had a lot of people ask me what has happened with my Zune, so I figured I would write an update on it. Mine is doing the shutoff thing too. It’s really freakin annoying. I’m currently updating the firmware to see if that will help. 25. mkosma Said,

My zune did the same thing twice this morning. Called Zune support, and learned that the support reps got a memo about this today. They are watching the issue and trying to diagnose it. Their belief — supported by my usage — is that this problem occurs only with certain types of encoding or DRM or errors in files. So it’s not a hardware problem — returning the device won’t help. It’s a firmware problem or a problem with a particular media file or type of file.

The most useful thing for us to do to help them fix this is to figure out what’s common about the files that cause the reset. Most important: Does the same song always reset the zune? If so, we can narrow our focus to what it is about that song. Of course, it could also be an intermittent error with a particular type of song, which will be trickier but still should be able to be isolated.

Here’s my info. My entire library is MP3 and breaks down as follows. Note I have NOTHING with any DRM.

60% - CDs ripped to FLAC, converted to vbr MP3 via Lame
    35% - MP3 files downloaded from emusic.com
5% - random collection of other MP3 files from unknown sources

My suspicion is that that tracks that are crashing are among my 5% “unknown origin” category.

  26. mkosma Said,

By the way, Alex at Microsoft Zune support (who was terrific) said that we should expect a firmware update very soon. And suggested that they want to get this issue fixed in the update if we can pin it down quick enough.

  28. bauhs Said,

I also am plagued by this annoying shut off issue. I also replaced mine and am seeing the issue with my new Zune as well. However, I don’t think it has anything to do with the song or the encoding. I keep my Zune in my front pocket and I use 3rd party headphones (have been using 2 different brands, same problem on both). The problem only occurs when I go from a sitting position to a standing position. It’s almost always as soon as I place pressure on the leg with the Zune in the pocket. I think this is a shock related HD issue. It doesn’t happen every time, and if I remember to get up slowly it won’t happen… thoughts?

  29. PrivateBurke Said,

Yo! I got zapped too. The day I got it! I thought it was because I was wearing a wool coat and it was static. But my Zune shuts off every once an awhile. Crap, I hope this isn’t terminal.

  30. WaVeS Said,

I’ve had my zune for 3 days now, and Its shut off 3 times twice yesterday and once today. I haven’t been shocked yet, however I am using the ear pieces that came with the zune. I’m curious if anyone else has a loud HDD? I’m hoping it doesn’t have bad sectors. As for that DRM theory I can go back to the same song after it shutting off and it plays it just as any other.

Side note: I’m wondering if anyone has bought the TuneBase FM Transmitter for Zune by Belkin. I’d like to know how you like it.

  31. Bonanno Said,

My Zune has been rebooting randomly as well. For those of you that got another one, did you take it back to the store that you bought it from to get another one, or did you send it in to Microsoft?

  32. Sudifice Said,

Same thing happens to me. I’ve also been shocked a few times, but it only happens when I get up from this one specific chair, it’s real weird.

I use the stock headphones, i’m hoping to update to the Zune Premiums soon.

Also, there seems to be one specific song that keeps turning off my Zune. Aeroplane Flies High, Turns Left, Looks Right by The Smashing Pumpkins. It’s about 8 minutes and it shut off at least 3 times before it played all the way through.

  33. PrivateBurke Said,

Hey everyone, On the Zune website it says you should not charge the battery from the front USB ports on your computer because they usually give out a weaker electrical signal then the rear ones (which is true) I was charging from the front and have switched to the rear ones. Were the people having random shut offs been charging from the front too?

  34. Olivier Said,

The reset happens to my Zune as well, but only when I listen using 3rd party headphones.

  35. WaVeS Said,

Front Ports? I use a usb hub i suppose it’d be weaker that way too. Still getting random shutoffs? When will the new fireware be out?

  36. WaVeS Said,

    *firmware

  37. vgregory Said,

Just called Microsoft about this exact same issue that I am having with my unit. Tech support told me to charge it using a different USB port. If that didn’t solve the problem, then I should contact them back and they would get the battery replaced. Sounds a lot like the same problem that I and many others have had with the Motorola Razr shutting off randomly.

I have found that mine shuts off after about 15-20 minutes while on battery. I don’t think it has ever happened when I have it plugged into my charger while in my car.

If ANYONE who has this issue gets theirs fixed or replaced directly by Microsoft, e-mail me personally and let me know what they did. vgrace@hotmail.com

Unfortunately, I bought mine at Best Buy in November and can’t return or exchange it. So, I am at Microsoft’s mercy.

  38. LG135 Said,

I’m glad to see that I’ve found more people with the same resetting problem! For what it’s worth, my zune has reset itself about 6 times in the last two weeks, the last being about 10 minutes ago, and it just happens randomly - when I’m sitting, walking, standing still - on random songs at random times. I also use both of my back usb ports for charging the zune and I’m still using the headphones that came with it… for now I’ll try using the front USB port to see if that makes the difference.

I don’t really have any other problems, just two things I’d love to be fixed:
The first would be the ability to edit things that are already on your Zune. I mean even on the computer software I can’t rename or move _anything_. There have been many times when I just wanted to move similar pictures into the folder and not being able to do so, as well as, after finding out the Zune doesn’t support foreign characters, not being able to change the title of a song so I actually read.

The second would be for a “Now playing” option to be added to the audio section - I could be listening to all my songs on shuffle, and then go look through some pictures - but when I push the back button it just goes back to the last picture I was on.
I know that if I just stop messing with it for awhile, it will go back to the audio, but I think it would be just a bit more convenient if there was just a “Now Playing” option.

  39. SinistarX Said,

I picked up a Zune just yesterday and have had it shut off three times today. However, never while I was listening to music. All three times were while the Zune was sitting at a menu.

I expected it to go into standby, but it went into a full shutdown (the Zune logo was displayed when I started back up). Even more interesting is that I couldn’t start it by normal means. It wouldn’t start up until I unplugged and reseated the headphones! I’m using the phones that came with the Zune, so there shouldn’t be any oddness there.

While I also have a 30G iPod, I quite prefer the Zune. Here’s hoping it isn’t a lemon.

  40. gansito7 Said,

Hi All! I too have had the same problem with my zune shutting off and zapping me. I noticed that it only does it when I’m using 3rd party headphones. When I connect it to my car’s stereo nothing happens. I really hope MS fixes this. I am very disappointed by this. If I knew this was gonna happen I would’ve just gotten an ipod.

  41. Avery Said,

I’ve had problems myself with my Zune restarting itself…It happens about six times per night. This is rather annoying since I listen to audiobooks and it a pain trying to find the same spot again. I turned on my backlight to always on while playing music and that seems to have fixed my problem. Plays non-stop all night long…albeit a shorter battery life.

  42. Antonyo Said,

HI I’m on my second Zune and I have the same problems with the Zune restarting itself randomly this is very very annoying it does it about 5 time a week I used to restart it everyday but now that doesnt even work MS needs to send an update soon because I’m a college student and walking around campus trying to turn my Zune back on is very irratating especially when it’s 17 degrees below zero

  43. IDidItAll Said,

Have the same shut off problems, too! But i had reformat my zune right “out off the box” on first start up - so all the peloaded songs where erased befor even seen the startup screen. My first zune startup screen gave me this “internal error - device must be formatted - all information will be erased”. I had only one option “ok”. After i did this, everything was fine - but naked.
Now i get the “shut off” problems. I will return mine and get a new one.

I still really like the zune player better than the ipod or sansa e280 and i own all of them. The volume control is just bad on the ipod and the sansa is super instable, black sreen etc.

  44. Tack45 Said,

I am also having the random shut-off problem, but I’ve never been zapped. Most of the time I can get it to turn back on by messing with the hold button and the headphones or by plugging it into my computer (which is a pain). Sometimes it just won’t start back up at all for ten minutes or so. I’ll try leaving the backlight on. I’ll just have to remember to charge it every night.

  45. meatsnack Said,

    * Same random reboot problem.
    * Usually only when listening to radio.
    * Also using third-party headphones.
    * Never been zapped.

My Zune has to be absolutly broken! This morining, on 5-1-07, my Zune was working just fine and did the same all through out the day. But when I got home, I decided to go ahead and sync some things that I needed to sync on to my Zune. And after that, my Zune starts to go buzzerc! I know it wasn’t the software of the things I synced because they were compatible to Zune. But now, none of the buttons will responed half the time. And when it does work, the little circles that light up on the Zune to show that your Zune is loading wont shut off. EVER!!! And now I cant even get the sucky thing to shut off! I dont no whats wrong my fellow Zuners, but until I do…..ZUNE SUCKS!!!!!

  48. Caligodzilla Said,

mi zune hold button broek of with no reason ccuz i never used it this suckkkszz

  53. DP Said,

Lol.. you are causing the resets yourself. The reason it appears to be caused by third-party headphones (but not always) and you have felt a shock once in your ear is… you created a static shock condition as you normally would (especially in winter) and the headphones/zune acted as a conductor once the circuit was completed between you, the zune and a ground. This can also occur in my experience with the usb connector on the bottom. The Zune has a lot of built-in failsafes and one documented one is to turn itself off if it detects an electrical surge. It wasn’t the Zune rebooting that caused the shock to your ear, it was the shock to your ear causing the reboot. If you start noticing when your Zune reboots it will probably be in a situation where static or another electrical discharge (reconnecting to my car charger causes it rarely) could cause it.

  54. Steve519 Said,

not true, I was only using the zune headsets and the resets were going on before the shocking happened, that was just my last straw for my zune. I happily went back to my ipod

  55. DP Said,

I have had it happen with the Zune headset once but it usually occurs with 3rd-party headsets. Now, the fact that it can act as such a good conductor… that is a prob.

  56. DP Said,

Oh, and I forgot to add.. you don’t necessarily have to feel a shock. It’s an annoyance for sure if just a some-time annoyance. I can understand if it’s a deal-breaker for many.

Man cant you all see???? MS has released faulty software ie: Windows Xp, Vista, faulty game systems ie: Xbox360 and hell now they released a faulty audio device ie: MS Zune. Probably a faulty harddrive is to really blame for the rebooting of the device. Some days mine doesnt do it at all, some days it does it like 6 times in a row. Now the biggest question is this, How hard do you think that Bill Gates is laughing at all of us suckers for buying his faulty shit?

  62. xaviershaun Said,

I’ve had my zune for about 3 months now and everything has been going well, except all of a sudden now while I’m listening to music, it freezes up when i try to scroll through my music, and the music continues to play. Also i barely have 200 songs on my device and when i look at storage it tells me 27.79 GB used, 0 GB free. I restarted it a few times and even did a few resets but it still does the same thing repeatedly. When i play certain songs sometimes it tells me that the song cannot be found and other times those same songs play. I don’t understand what’s going on with this Zune.

    1. plug in the zune
    2. open zune software and begin updating firmware
    3.please wait….
it always goes through the same process then when it seems done, it shuts down before finishing. and on the screen it says it was unable to update the firmware. this is getting type annoying. i bought it in June, so im hoping i can just get my money back and get a damn I-Pod

  65. mernmern Said,

I love my Zune… or at least I did. I bought it about a week ago and everything worked well. However, it is shutting down in the same manner as other people have described, even when locked. I just wanted so say, thanks for the forum. Now, that I know this is not an isolated problem, I will have to figure out what to do next.

  66. mernmern Said,

Jedome - Thanks for the link. That seems to be what is happening to my zune. The reset works regardless of whether or not the zune is locked.
So, while the reason for the issue has been determined, there seems to be no solution. This will be a problem.
By the way, the only reason this bothers me is because I have been listening to some converted audio books and the mp3 are hours long.

  67. Jedome Said,

Mernmern - Man, that stinks. I find it frustrating to have to ff 15-20 minutes into the podcasts that I listen to let alone you having to ff hours into it. Frustrating!!!!
It does seem really odd that the reboot works even when the button lock is on. Hopefully Microsoft will come up with a solution in their next update.
Speaking of updates, the only thing I am not fond of is the fact that I cannot add podcasts to a playlist so at the end of a podcast I have to bring up my podcasts and select the next one on the list. Because I have to do this I am bringing up the display which is killing the battery faster. Don’t know if that makes sense but for me it is aggravating.

  68. ZeNiTH Said,

I just got my refurb (r0×0rz!) zune 30 yesterday and have experienced the random reboot in the middle of songs about 4 times so far today. I loaded 2.2 before the first time I synced.

It has not yet happened while the zune is being charged, only when its running off battery power. I’m using altec lansing earphones and I know that nothing on the zune itself was touched when the restart occurs. It does restart in 5-10 seconds, so it’s not a bad wait… I’ll have to see if my gf’s zune we got yesterday is doing the same thing as well.

  69. warson Said,

Hi guys, im from manila and my mom gave me this stupid zune. i like it better than ipod due to the good resolution. unfortunately, this stupid player keeps on restarting…. i cant even finish a damn song…. the problem is, there is no support here in manila for zune. i have to pay at least 100 USD to have it brought to MS US. This unit really sucks. i tried using the latest firmware and nothing helped. can anyone have any suggestion on how this problem will be fixed? im back using my old ipod….

  70. Paul Said,

My zune also shuts off/reboots at random times. I have found one sure fire way to cause it to happen. I can mow the lawn all day with no problems, but as soon as I fire up the weed wacker, the zune lasts about 2 seconds before shutting down. Happens everytime without fail, I cannot run the zune and cut weeds at all. I’ve also had it shut off a lot on planes. Could EMI be causing some of these problems?

  71. Jason Said,

Same reboot problem. Wow, what is happening with Microsoft? I’ve heard stories before, but I have had my Xbox 360 crash with the red light of death. I have had a Microsoft racing wheel for Xbox 360 not center correctly and be off by a few centimeters to the left. And now, I have a one day old Zune player that has shutoff 5x in approximately 2 hours of playing. Random times, random songs. There is no “static.” It’s just sitting on a leather couch next to me. I will send this back and will never buy another Microsoft item again! I can’t state how extremely disappointed in this product I am. So promising. I should have just bought an ipod.

  72. Jason Said,

Btw, my Zune was fully charged and I was using the including earphones. No excuse for this to happen…none.

  73. GANGSTA BULLET Said,

  75. Ohioscan Said,

Add me to the list of new Zune owners
suffering “Random Reboots” I have Reset,
    Re-Installed & Upgraded Fimware. I used
    different headphones and no headphones
while the Zune laid untouched on table.
Still reboots randomly every few minutes.
This sucks there seems to be enough chatter
on the forums for MS to address this
    major bug.

  76. Chantel Said,

Add me to the list of Random Reboots please!

So at around 3 in the morning while Im LISTENING TO MY ZUNE, it cuts off and its been about 10 minutes and it wont come back on. Ive had this device since September and this is the first time it’s happened. Ill be emialing and calling Microsoft about this and the place I bought it from because I’m getting my money back if it does not come back on in an hour.

  77. Atelerix Said,

My zune, which I got for Christmas YESTERDAY has the same reboot problem. It fricken SUCKS. I’m sorry. I’ve been searching the web for a solution, (or at least an explanation), and have come up with nothing. I guess we’ll have to return them. Goddamn it…

  78. HammerTime Said,

Just got a new $99 zune. It has reset on it’s own 2 times in the last few days. I was handling the headphone jack both times. Don’t know whats going on. I’ve been listening to “The Tech Guy” podcasts.

  79. HammerTime Said,

Update to my comment is entry 79:

Yesterday my Zune reset about 10 time while listening to a podcast. It was sucking big time.

Contacted Zune support, they said to let it run the battery all the way down and recharge. I’m still experimenting but hopefully this will stop the resting. Will keep updating.

  80. Alexish2008 Said,

OMG! my zune has been rebooting everytime I listen to music, not videos…what’s the problem? I’ve neverr dropped it…I should of just gotten the IPOD :( ..any help?

  81. Joel Said,

My Microsoft Zune 30g malfunctioned and sent a static discharge or electrical shock through the earbuds to my ears. At the same time, the Zune reset and emitted a very loud noise through the earbuds.

I suffered a temporary threshold shift, meaning my hearing was impaired for some time, and I still deal with incessant pain and ringing in my ears.

Has anyone suffered similar injuries? If so, please elaborate. Did you report the incident to Microsoft? Did you see a doctor? Please share your experience by commenting below or at http://microsoftzunereviews.blogspot.com/

  82. Doc_Holliday Said,

I got the 30g zune for X-mas and it constantly resets during my podcasts, but not during music or video

It’s a real pain; it instantly ruins my day

Never had the shock though (and not looking forward to it)

  83. Doc_Holliday Said,

    by the way….

    it just did it again

    *shakes fist

  84. Alden Said,

Ive been using my zune perfectly fine for a long time but very recently it crashes frequently mid song or radio, and loads slowly. Ive noticed this problem seems to happen almost exclusively while i am walking with it in my pocket, i have not updated the songs or firmware in months but it started crashing only yesterday. I am thinking mine might be a hardware issue since it crashes while walking and thus shaking?

  85. Andy Said,

yesterday i got a 4 gb zune from target and I have the same shut off problem but it has happened to me very frequentley. after about 3 songs playing it will either restart or shut down completely and it sucks BIG ASS having to go back into music and play a song just so it can shut down again. it seems to do it mostly when i have the hold switch on or when it is just playing with the screen off so i may try having the backlight always on even though it sucks the hell out of the battery. I am thinking about returning it and get a new one but everyone here who has done so seems to have the same problem again. I personally dont like Ipods because of the boring layout and that damn click wheel thing. Also, what may be the problem is that when i gou my zune i immediately turned it on without charging it and it seems with lithium batterys you have to fully charge the device the very first time you charge. btw i have never been shocked and do not plan on it.

  86. Andy Said,

(using the stock headphones by the way)

  87. tidda24 Said,

same shut down problem for me. I just got the 80 gb two days ago and it has shut down 5 times during music. Also my podcast won’t download to it and i have even made sure all of the settings were correct. Good device. Bad errors

  88. Dublingirl Said,

I’ve just started to experience this shut down thing and its really annoying - happens when listening to radio or music. I have the device for about 5 months and this is the first time its happened !!! What a pain as I live in Ireland and it was bought in New York - so no chnace of returning it for a replacement !!!

  89. xPPPx HaVoK Said,

My zune just recently started shutting off, and it is doing it everytime i turn it on. It is charged up all the way, i made sure of that, so its some sort of error in the zune. Im just going to return it, hopefully i wont have to pay alot for a new one.

  90. Amberr Said,

My Zune randomly shut off last night and it STILL wont turn back on.
it didnt shock me, but it has been WELL over 13 hours and it wont turn back on.
    im pissed.

  91. MaryKrisMoose Said,

My 8g Zune randomly shuts off as well. I turn on my lock feature when I’m listening to the music and it doesn’t turn off anymore. I might just be getting lucky, but it’s working so far.

  92. Dakota Said,

I have a 2nd gen 80gb Zune, and I want to return it. How am I supposed to run with it, or even walk to work, with it constantly shutting off. I have to wait for it to power on, find the track because it doesn’t save it, then find the spot that it turned off at, which is hard to do with a large audiobook/podcast file.

This thread has been going for 14 months. Has there been any resolution? The current firmware versions haven’t done anything. Is there another site devoted to this issue?

  93. girly Said,

i want to throw this bitch away but i can’t
it keeping shutoff suddenly while i’m listening music and it happen like 6 or 7 times everyday
    i’m so mad
    what am i gonna do?

  94. Nate Said,

March 16, 2008. Mine has always done it for about a year now. Leaving the backlight on seems to work well, but I can’t believe this has not been fixed yet. It definitely has to do with static as it happens all the time when wearing fleece, getting in and out of fabric car seats, and other activities that generate static. It might have to do with the case material and grounding issues, but not happening while having the backlight on makes no sense to me.

  95. Kayla Said,

So, I have had my Zune for less than a year and it’s one of the older models but I still should not be having problems!! So like a week ago my zune decided to recieve this error message saying that there was an internal error and that all data was to be erased. Needless to say I was pissed because I had like 15 GB of songs, videos, and podcasts on it and so I was like what the heck. I turned it back on and it was completely bare. I tried putting some music on it and got like 2 CD’s on it. I tested it out and it randomly shuts off or gliches out. I am so irate about it all…I can’t take it back because I bought it last year so…I don’t know….HELP!

  96. Scott Said,

My Zune has this problem ALL THE TIME…even when the battery is FULLY charged. Will be returning…bummed.

  97. DJ Said,

  98. JOHN Said,

I TOO have this problem with my 2nd! 30gig Zune. Dont want to go to Ipod cuz iTunes sucks and do does that wheel. Randomly shuts off and its gotten to the point of not getting through 1-3 song somtimes..does the same thing with radio. Use it 3-4 hours at UPS and it does the same thing with the radio on. VERY frustrating

my zune is so annoying i try turning it on and the screen lights up black or some times you see a glimps of the background can someone please help

  102. Helen Said,

I’ve had my zune since I think it was either september or november. The first one got stolen out of my purse the day after I got it in the one area where my school DOESN’T have a camera installed and so the refurbished zune I was given just started to turn off randombly just as soon as I started going out for walks. What a cock.
OH yes I use better headphones than the zune earbuds.
Why oh why didn’t I get an ipod. . .
SLGDSJ:LKGJDS:LKG AGH. what a bitch. I guess I’ll try the backlight thing although the concept makes me want to slit my wrists.

  103. BlackDraegen Said,

The random shut-off thing; Mine does it too- well DID; It would always restart when I had it near my computer and sometimes other random places but it doesn’t do it anymore, I went on some searching and found out that the Zune has an Anti-static function to protect itself and automatically shuts off if there’s too much static going on around it. (supposedly)
like I said, mine DID this but has stopped for a while now… my only real issue is battery life; maybe listening to the music makes time seem to pass by awefully fast? but it seems to go quicker than 14 hours and my back light is always on low, 5 seconds, and wireless is always off… who knows
    -BD

  104. Michelle Said,

Okay so last night i was listening to my zune and everything was fine i’d put it on hold while listening to my playlist and the blacklight would go out, like usual….but then i noticed that the light just stayed on all night??Weird and annoying if you like sleeping in pitch black.i.e.Me!! What do i do i tried resetting the settings to 1 sec and nothing 15 sec. nothing!!

  105. My Mum Said,

We have many bugs related to the recent update of the firmware. The main bug has been the freezing of the Zune and not being able to reset it. We are now getting about 30 questions a day all with similar issues.

Oh shit my zune did the same thing were it would just rebout ramdomley but about a 4 days ago i was listening to some music and my zune just froze shut off and hasnt turned back on since the what the hell do i do to get my bby working again (if it makes any difference it was the halo 3 edition 30g)

  107. Tommy Said,

A few weeks ago I charged my zune full, took it out, and later on in the day tried to listen to it, but it would not turn on. I tried all the ways to reboot it but nothing worked. I would plug back into the computer and the zune software would not recognize it, nor did the zune show any signs of life.
Then the next day I plug it in and a picture of a low battery sign appears on the zune, and then the zune icon appears and a white loading bar loads across the bottom of the screen. Then the it starts charging. I could listen to it for a day and then it would just not turn on randomly.
Now when I try to charge it does not respond but if I wait a few hours, and try plugging it in again, it will do the same as before and charge. Once the power is full it just turns off and won’t work. It’s almost as if charging the zune drains the battery.
I am just really annoyed and just want this problem solved so I can listen to my tunes again. I would appreciate any help.

  108. Olivier Kay Said,

My Zune shuts off everywhere 5 min. Im so pissed off. I cant even listen to an entire song. Help Me.

  109. Miya Said,

My zune is skipping through all of my songs i can not listen to any of them ive unloaded and reloaded and says they are not there yet i can watch videos fine this is so annoying.

  110. F*ckMicrosoft Said,

Yeah my zune wont confirm that its connected to my comp and every now and then when it does itll start syncing and then randomly turn off… Truely fucking pissing me off, if I knew that the zune would turn to shit after a couple years I would have never bothered to get one. and the warranty isnt anything at all, same thing happened to my 360.. Plays fine long enough for the warranty to go out then it just shits itself and dies.

  111. chanel Said,

zunes are the worst i swear. i exchanged my first one because it shut off and after i charged it it still wouldn’t come back on. after i returned it, the second one wouldn’t stay on over a period of time. i’m going to return this one and get my money back.

  112. Michelle Said,

My Zune is doing something of the same thing. It turned off today randomly even though I have a full battery and when it did turn back on, the backlight didn’t turn on at all. I have no idea what to do, but I can’t live without a backlight.

  113. Paul Said,

Aight. Same issue here. random restarts. Never had an issue with it UNTIL I got this nifty new snowboarding jacket. The problem has nothing to do with firmware/hardware issues.
It’s got something to do with static electricity.
After I got home from a very frustrating trip to Breckenridge (due to Zune failures in my new jacket)
I put in my pocket again and shuffled around my appartment…..ZAP…ouch….and off. Maybe try putting in in another pocket? O.o GG Microfail…

  114. Paul Said,

Lol, new pocket….I can’t make it shut off now.
