With the Locust Horde digging deeper to prepare for their finaly blow against humanity, we only have seven more days of rest before we have to stand side by side with our bretheren to fight back for our very own survival. So in order for us to be prepared and ready for this massive invasion, we will be supplying two videos from now up to the release of Gears of War 2 on November 7. What is up XBL Radio listeners, B4 here with a review for you today. My review will be for a game that is a sequel to one of the goriest, most brutal, drug filled, sexually explicit football games to ever hit the market. I am talking about Blitz: The League II by Midway. Without further adieu, let us get right into the review.

The thing that Blitz: The League games are known for outside of the EA and 2K sports games, are that they try to deliver a story that focuses on the darker side of football, drugs, girls, brutal hits, injuries, going to jail, etc. The campaign mode is the meat and potatoes of this game, and it is actually pretty intriguing, has  a few plot twists, and other side stories that you will keep you interested throughout the game. You are franchise, the first player in the “league” who can play up to two different positions, the comissioner of the league wants you to join his team, the LA Riot. You refuse because you want to play for your hometown, he gets upset, and eventually the story becomes a battle between you and him while you work your way up to the Division I championship.

You will get almost around 20 hours or so out of the campaign, because other than playing games, you can hook up with girls to earn different upgrades for your team, such as reduced prices on steroids, better training facilities, and more staff to help out with injuries. You have the option to auto-train your team, or choose to do it on your own, “auto” training is much easier, trust me. There are trophies you can unlock, equipment you can earn, and much more.

The graphics are passable this time around. The players on the field look great, they are animated very well, and dont all look like they have blocks of woods as their arms. Their uniforms will gather dirt, mud,  and snow on them, depending on the forecast on the field.  Cheerleaders look just as good as the players, but the medical staff looks like they were brought over from the Xbox days, they are as dull and lifeless as ever. The fans are  acceptable, and each stadium doesnt look as generic as before, and the screen will also tend to have rain, mud, blood, haze, or anything else you can think of on there from time to time during gameplay. Cutscenes in the campaign look good, and when someone speaks, it actually looks like they are saying what they are trying to say. All in all, a much bigger graphical improvement over last years version.

Sound is good, music is a variety of rap and hard rock mixed tracks. Crackling bones, filthy words coming out of mouths, screams from being in pain, all sound like they should sound in real life.  Jay Mohr, Lawrence Taylor, and Frank Caliendo lend their vocies to the game, and do a pretty decent job of not sounding like meatheads all the time.

The gameplay is where I believe that this game is a winner. It is as fast paced, outlandish, and fun as the last installment, with a few changes. Late hits are back, and are activated by pressing the A button over somebodies body, and then repeatedly tapping it to inflict more damage. There are a few different late hit moves, all of which are funny, and all help add a clash icon to your clash meter, which can help you make crazy catches, interceptions, grueling tackles, season ending injuries, etc. You can also target the position of the body that you want to inflict damage on by moving the right thumbstick to the area you want to hit, then rapidly press A to inflict more damage. Enough damage will cause a gross cutscene to occur, in which you see the players ribs crack, shoulders pop, and colons explode, all in their HD glory.

Outside of the campaign you can play games on Xbox live with your created team, play offline in a tournament mode up to 8 players, or play a variety of mini games with a variety of rules, like no helmets or pads, score a td to keep possesion of the ball, etc. All modes are fun, and do add some replay value to the game.

In the end, Blitz: The League II is the type of game that is a nice, gruesome alternative, to the sissified, simulated versions of football games that we see today. If you have a strong stomach, or just want to break some bones, hit on some women, and play a fast-paced, exciting game of football, then Blitz: The League II is the game for you.

As the launch of Gears of War 2 nears, the ad campaign begins to pick up. Yesterday on Yahoo Games, the newest commercial for Gears 2 was released, named Last Day. Now I have to say that this commercial is just about as good as the Mad World commercial for Gears 1. Have a look!

Capcom’s Blue Bomber made his triumphant return the same exact way he kicked off his career on the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1987, in classic 2D. This was a daring move in Capcom’s part, but after playing Mega Man 9, the nostalgia came back and I felt like I was seven again. This new iteration of Mega Man reminded me so much of Mega Man 2, which it should, seeing that it was the basis for Mega Man 9. The only difference here is that we got leaderboards, achievements, and downloadable content. Mega Man 9 is only a single player game with the online leaderboards, it is an action/platformer, and has a rating of E for everyone.

To start things off, let’s talking about the first thing you will experience, the graphics. As mentioned earlier, the graphics are the classic 2D 8-bit presentation. The intro of the game holds true to classic Mega Man, simplistic pixilated art work and text wrapping underneath it. The menu has pretty basic options, things you would have seen on the NES with a few additions for achievements and such. You will also see the same 8-bit style art as you play through all the levels. So in a general statement, what you would have seen on a Nintendo Entertainment System, you will see in this game, including the difficulty.

This game is DIF-FI-CULT! Until you grasp the levels. This game gave what the hardcore fans wanted, return to the old Mega Man 2 difficulty, where it took you hours just to beat the game on the first try. The learning curve is very high in this game, but once you’ve mastered the patterns and the enemy locations, you should be able to beat the game in about an hour. The bosses seemed very well balanced. Each boss has its weakness to one of the other boss’ weapon that you gain after defeating it. So finding the pattern is also a key to helping speed up the game and making the game just a little bit easier.

Another thing I enjoyed about the game was even though this is the ninth iteration of Mega Man, the levels don’t feel like remakes of any of the older Mega Man games. They seemed very creative and diverse. In some levels you have to go over and under enemies and in other levels you have to use them to help you.    

The controls are pretty basic. What should we expect from a game that could have come out in the NES era? But in all seriousness, Mega Man can jump varying heights depending on the pressure applied to the jump button. The MegaBuster only shots one shot at a time, so you will constantly be mashing the fire button when you have the opportunity to fire at the boss. You do have the option at any time during the play of a level to switch out weapons or use Rush to help you get to areas to high to reach by normal jumping. Beat also makes a return as a purchasable item.

My honest thoughts about this game is, if you like to play games for nostalgia reasons, this is a must get. This game, compared to others, will definitely fall short. The graphics, a “remake” (as I have heard), and the lack of multiplayer may not justify the $10 price tag on this game. But as stated earlier, Capcom did add online leaderboards, achievements, and a time trial mode that will add to the replay value. So in conclusion, if you can deal with the graphics in order to play a very challenging game, then you need to pick up Mega Man 9!
