Hey what is up everybody at PN and XBL Radio, Mr B4 here to give you the latest news as to what is going on in the gaming community. I do not have news for you today, what I do have for you is a review of a game that I recently played for the Wii. The game is called We Love Golf, it was developed by Camelot Software Planning, and published by Capcom. It is basically an arcade style golf game like Mario or Hot Shots Golf, but with Wii controls.

Before I get into my thoughts about this game, let us take some time to go over the modes available:

As many of you know, on July 29, Soulcaliber IV was released on the current generation consoles. This game has been anticipated by many fighting game enthusiasts not only because of its weapon-based fighting, but also for its significant quality that was done in past Soulcaliber games. This marks the fifth title in the series (Soulcaliber Legends was a spinoff) to be released after it made its debut on the Dreamcast nine years ago. With the cast of characters, the unique fighting style, and the stunning graphics, it is not a bad game to pick up, despite the few problems the game may have. Read the rest of this entry »

Geometry Wars Retro Evolved 2:

The long awaited sequel to the game that saved/started the Xbox 360 Live Arcade has finally arrived, let’s take stock on the new gameplay modes and added co-op and versus play. There are now 6 gameplay modes each of which changes the standard formula of steer with left stick shoot with the right stick. Gone from every mode are the extra weapons from Geometry Wars. Bizarre Creations added geoms in this foray. Geoms add to your multiplier, and the multiplier does not go back to zero when you die. So let’s go over the new modes shall we. Golf: Tee It Up! Banner

If you have ever tried to play a Tiger Woods PGA Tour Game you will know that unless you are Tiger Woods it is going to take a lot of practice, or MS points, in order to compete.  Golf: Tee It Up! would be the complete opposite from this; in fact my friend, Luck503, was getting eagles and long distance chip-ins on his second round of 18.  This just demonstrates Golf: Tee It Up!’s casual pick-up and play style that would be a great addition to everyone’s XBLA library.

Gameplay: A-

Golf: Tee It Up can be just your classic 3 A button click golf game, but for the golfer that wants a little more depth it has that also (see Controls).  When you first start Golf : Tee It Up! you will notice the quick play option, for when you just want to get to hitting some balls, or you have the choice to pick from stroke, match or cup challenge modes.  Add to this the option of 1-4 player local, multi- or co-op modes and, over Xbox Box Live, 2-4 player multi- or co-op play and what you have is one highly addictive golf game!  Did I mention the Character Customization? No.  Well it is in here also.  You can pick between Male/Female Characters, as well as customize their clothing.  Everything from hair, shirts, pants, shoes, and gloves is customizable; and sometimes even humorous, as choices range from bunny and monster parts to studious and work attire.  Although more options would have been nice there is word of future DLC coming!

Controls: B+

As stated above Golf: Tee It Up! can be played as just a 3-click A button style game that anyone could pick-up and play, or for the more in depth golfer this game has the detailed controls they would be looking for.  Before your shot use the Left/Right Bumpers, for the map and flight of ball respectively.  The Left Stick is used for the majority of movements, while the Right Stick determines the spin placed on the ball (see orange dot on ball in upper right of screen).  The Left and Right Triggers move through the available clubs, while the B Button can add a boost to each shot, if you still have any Focus Time left (more on later).  Once the shot is all lined up is when the 3-click A Button comes into play.  Once to start the swing, once to set the power of the shot and one to set the accuracy.
Then after the ball is hit is when the Focus Time comes into play.  Using the Left Stick you can make minor changes to the path of the ball, granted you have Focus Time left.  This is limited to 4.0 seconds per hole and can be compounded from hole to hole (up to 12.0 seconds).  While the Focus Time does not do major changes in the path of the ball, I would suggest the best time to use the Focus Time is with a putter in hand.  After lining up your putt holding down the X Button will show you the path the putt will take.  Since the putting is the hardest part of Golf: Tee It Up! this helps read the hills and valleys of the greens; making putting a lot easier!

Graphics/Sound: A

Golf: Tee It Up! uses a detailed, cartoonist style which fits right in with its casual setting.  Running in 720p, and with very little online lag, I have not experienced any issues with the graphics of Golf: Tee It Up!  In fact I find myself getting lost in the scenario while playing looking for hidden easter eggs.  Using 5.1 Surround Sound my friend and I experience what we thought to be a bird in the house, but soon realized it was the games.  Also just a hint:  if you see or hear a bunny hoping around, and happen to be wearing some bunny attire, hit your ball near the bunny for another “special sound”!

Replayabiltiy: B

With 1-4 player local play, 2-4 player local/online/co-op play in a variety of modes like stroke, match or cup challenges Golf: Tee It Up! will have you playing over and over by yourself, with friends, and/or against random people over Xbox Live.  The only issue I have with Golf: Tee It Up! is it launched with only two (2) courses, Caribbean and Parkland.  As stated above, it has already been said that future DLC courses and character customization pieces will be release, not yet known if premium or free DLC, but one more course, at least, would have been a welcome addition.

Overall: A-

I would say with its single player alone I would recommend to go download/play the trial and give Golf: Tee It Up! a serious consideration for purchase.  But then add in all of its various local and online modes, the detail that two people on the same console can go online and play those various modes; I would say to stop reading this now and go purchase Golf: Tee It Up! its that good.

Then after you purchase it send a message to any of the XBLRadio Hosts and let play a round!

What is up members of P*N and XBLRadio, Mr B4 here giving you the latest news as to what is going on in the gaming community. Instead of a news story for you today, I have a review of a game that I played recently for the Nintendo Wii, through their Wiiware service. The game is called Major League Eating: The Game, it was developed by Mastiff Games, and costs 1,000 Wii points ($10 USD).

Here is a quick rundown of the modes that you will find in this game:

1. Single Player: This mode basically plays out like a game of Mortal Kombat, but instead of moving up in ranks from fighters that you defeat, you will move up in ranks after you defeat each of your eating competitors. You have 10 characters that you can play as, four that you start with, and six that you have to unlock by completing this mode.

2. Versus mode: One-on-one versus play with a friend:  same method of playing as single player mode.

3. Online Multi-player: Plays out the same way as both the versus and single player modes, with the exception of leader boards that allow you to track your win-loss record.

As you can already tell, this game does not have much to offer as far as modes go. Let us see if the gameplay can save it at all. Let us get right into the review.

Hellboy Box Art

Hey what is up everybody at PN and XBL Radio, it is Mr B4 here to give you the latest about what is going on in the gaming community. I do not have any nintendo news for you this week, what I do have is a written review for a game that I played recently. The game is called Hellboy: The Science of Evil, and it is available for the PS3, 360, and PSP. I will be reviewing the Xbox 360 version of the game.

Without further adieu, let us get right into the review:

With the release of the new Hellboy movie only days away, what better way to cash in on the movie franchise than to release a game that is loosely based on the movie in someway shape or form. Hellboy: The Science of Evil is a beat-em-up game that is tied in with the movie release. To be honest with you, this is a title that should have never been released, and I will tell you why.

Hellboy

Story (D-): This is by far the biggest dissapointment of this game. I am honestly going to tell all of you right now that I could not figure out what the story was in this game whatsoever. You basically move from one random location to another without being told why you are doing so. You go from being in a graveyard, to a forest, to somewhere in Japan, to a rainy abandoned town, to a desert, then to a castle.  There are certain characters you meet along the way who will explain to you the reason as to why everything is going on, but honestly, it gets confusing and uninteresting very quickly. I would have just preferred the story from the movie, that way at least there would be some from of structure to it.

Sound(C-): There is nothing special in the game as far as sounds are concerned. When Hellboy beats down enemies, all you hear is a basic whooshing sound, which is kind of strange considering the size of his hand, you would think it make a more thunderous sound, but this is not the case. It is kind of cool to hear the sound of an entire wall crumbling when Hellboy beats it down with his fists. Enemies have no sounds other than grunts, which makes it easier for you to beat down on them, but really also gives them a lack of personality.

The voice acting is pretty good for the most part, with Ron Perlman’s sarcastic sense of humor being the highlight of most of the voice acting in the cutscenes. Other people that you encounter, such as the witch, and a few skeleton people, do an okay job of voice acting, but do not do enough to counteract the one liners from Ron Perlman.

The music is pretty bad as well, with literally the same background music repeating itself over and over again from level to level. When you first hear it, it does sound pretty cool, menacing, and scary, but after awhile you will grow tired of it. Different background music for each of the different levels would have been nice, but sadly they are non-existent.

Hellboy's Fist

Graphics(B-): Graphics are actually the high point of this game. Character models for the most part look next-gen, with Hellboy once again being the highlight of the graphics department. He looks very menacing, has piercing red eyes, and much detail has gone into the overall look of his body as far as muscles go. Environments are nothing special, there are a few nice lighting effects here and there, but much more could have been done to make the environments more inviting, such as more parts of the environment being available to destroy. As it stands, the environments look like they were taken from games on the original xbox.

Gameplay/Controls(C-): The game is a beat-em up, which basically comes down to mashing buttons to defeat your enemies, primarily in this case the X-button will end up being your button of choice. You can do other combos by mixing the X and Y buttons together, but they are not really neccesary or fun to do. There are also finishers that you can perform on both small and large enemies by grappling them with the RT button and by pressing the B button, but the only time that you will need to use them in order to progress through the game is during some boss fights, that is it.

Boss fights themselves are boring and unintersting, and really require no other strategy to them other than mashing on the X button until the enemy is stunned, then do a finishing move, then the fight ends. Even though the fighting is dull and repetitive, it is quite easy to understand. You can also use your gun by pressing the LB button to shoot at your enemies, and the RB button to select different types of ammo that you will find throughout the game. The different types of ammo include a spread shot, a power shot, a grenade shot, a flame shot, a crystal shot, etc.  You really do not need to use your guns that much throughout the game, other than to shoot an object to open it, to break through a wall, etc.

You can also use Hellboy’s fists to break through walls, open up certain areas, light torches to burn down obstacles, but that is about it. All of these actions can be performed by locking onto something with the RT button, then pressing the X button to perform the action. These action promps do not occur that often throughout the game, leaving you wondering why they were put there in the first place.

The biggest dissapointment in the gameplay department is the camera positioned on Hellboy. The camera places Hellboy in a fixed perspective point of view, making it hard for you to see where enemies are coming from, judge distances between certain gaps where you have to jump, where an enemy is during a boss fight, etc. The fact that you cannot adjust the view at all is very dissapointing and frustrating. By simply allowing players to adjust the view, alot more parts of this game could have been easier to complete.

Hellboy fighting

Replay Value (D-) : Other than completing the maing quest, which only consists of six levels, there is not much else to do. You can play through the game again either alone or online with a friend to complete certain tasks in order to gain achievements, such as kill a certain amounts of enemies with a certain weapon, find artifacts, etc., but that is about it. Some unlockable costumes or new weapons might have given gamers a reason to play through the game one more time, but sadly they are nowhere to be found, a major dissapointment.

Overall (D): While the nostalgia of playing as Hellboy and smashing your way through enemies and obstacles can be fun for about an hour or so, the fun wears off pretty quickly. With bad camera angles, unintersting boss fights, decent dialogue, repetitive gameplay, and a disjointed story, this is a game that you should definitely pass on. The only reason I gave it a D instead of an F is because you do receive a free movie ticket to see the new Hellboy movie when you buy the game.

Give it a rent if you are looking for an easy way to gain achievement points, otherwise, just do not bother playing it at all.

Take care gamers, and I will see you next time.

Take Care,

Mr B4
