Leo Laporte: “I think the PS3 stands to be a huge bust.”

Some might say, “Leo is no gaming expert”. Well, gaming is right up his alley as the subject does harmonize in the realm of technology. Leo Laporte is a Tech Guru, in fact–considered by many–The Tech Guru. With over 250,000 weekly downloads of TWiT and over several hundred thousand more downloads of his other tech publications to go along with his live radio show on KFI 640 AM in LA, Laporte knows what he’s talking about.

Laporte knows his stuff. Has he been wrong about things? Not often. Will he be wrong about this one? November 17th is not the day we’ll find out. Of course the PS3 is gonna sell out that day. But with the Xbox 360 having a year jump start and the Nintendo Wii launching two days later for less than half the price, perhaps there will be a new console king this generation.

Leo needs to stick to topics he knows things about. I would not trust his word on anything gaming related.

There is no clear winner or looser in this gen, I wish people would keep things in perspective. Also his comments show a bias against Sony/SE.

It’s funny how everyone is automatically assuming the PS3 will come out on top based on name recognition and technology alone. It will all boil down to games, online experience and price. For those of you that say “The PS3 will just come out in front” I have 1 thing to say: PROVE IT.

Leo was just stating his opinion. He didn’t claim that he believed that it would be a bust. Just stated what we all know, Sony needs to work a little harder to sell this system. The price is high because of a BluRay drive that I personally believe noone will really care to have. For example, I could care less. I dont use my game systems to watch movies, ect. They’re game systems and thats what I use them for. Plus I dont want a new format and I dont want to pay $30+ a movie. Now thats my opinion.

Forget Betamax. Ever heard of the Mini-Disc, UDP, PSP, Sony DRM CD ala rootkit? The Playstation 3 is not on my wish-list for a reason. Those who are looking for “proof” that the PS3 will fail, need only to look at Sony’s recent performance.

Sony has failed lots of times. Betamax was a marketing failure, they had superior system but it was crushed by the JVC/Matsushita VHS marketing department. Other examples: do you own an Aibo? Proprietary formats like ATRAC3? UMD is failing and expect a vanish on that soon. Network Walkman?
I love Sony products. But they certainly don’t hit every ball out of the park.
What i actually said was, the PS3 will “just” come out on top, that is not win by a clear margin.
Its very hard to post anywhere these days, with all the fanboys & little kids everywhere.
I agree it will be interesting to see what happens in a couple of years.

It’s all about the GAMES. I still don’t own a XBox or XBox 360 because there really are not any compelling games for me to buy. I bought a PS2 because of Gran Tourismo. And Nintendo DS because of New Supermario, Brain Age, etc. The Wii actually looks very appealing to me. New Controls scheme and all. Plus Nintendo just has totally cool games. I don’t care they are not in HD or whatever. It’s all about the awesome games. Wii’s new control thing might be a reason as well. But if there is something on the PS3 that is kick ass. I might get one.

I’m not a gamer, last time I’ve played any game it was more than 4 months ago.
And I think I will buy PS3 because it has Blu-Ray, Linux and than because it is game console . I was going to buy MediaCenter computer but nice one would be more than $1000. From that point of view PS3 represents a good value. Maybe Sony should market PS3 a bit to people like me and in time when they lower price more gamers would buy it.
Entertainment center sound good to me.
I respect Leo, but I really doubt he knows anything about gaming. He obviously doesn’t understand PS gamers and really offended me with the Final Fantasy 72 BS. He’s lost a lot of my respect lately. Oh well, I look forward to PS3 and FFXIII. I’ll be getting my copy of FFXII tomorrow too.

Just wanted to chime in on this topic. I think Leo has the right to his own opinion. He is pretty tech-save, and has a vast knowlege of past tech successes and failures. His statement is merely an observation on current practices from the Sony corp.
The one thing that makes responses to this post trivial is the use of the word “FANBOY”. It seems that, on both sides, whenever someone disagrees with a particular product they are called FANBOY. I would rather have a response that contradicts the other person. Saying “FANBOY” seems like your simply dismissing the other person, without even trying to rebute his comments.
I can assure you that XBL Radio has 2 non-fanboys. I, and TOG, have spoken fairly, since day one, about the Wii and the PS3. If you listen to the show, or even read our forums, you will see that we are gamers first. So I don’t care who has the best console. As long as I can purchase it, and it’s a great system, I will probably own it. Being a “FANBOY” places you in a bad position as a gamer. If you are a “FANBOY” you are limiting your options, being fed whatever you are served, and dismissing compitition. I for one am a consumer, who at this point enjoys the 360. However I won’t let MS, Nintendo, or Sony tell me how to spend my money. I will purchase whichever console gives me the enjoyment I crave.

Well said, Carpal. I could only justify buying one console last gen, and the Xbox was it for me. There were a few PS2 games that I wanted, but couldn’t play, i.e. GTA series, God of War, Guitar Hero and I think that’s it. GTA made it to Xbox eventually, and I didn’t even care for it that much after I got it. I still haven’t played God of War, but it’s certainly not a system seller for me, and Guitar Hero is comming to Xbox 360 with a wireless guitar controller.
I’ve never liked FF anything, or other Japanese RPG’s or even Metal Gear games, so, for me, if you feel that the games I like and don’t like force me to be an Xbox/Xbox 360 fanboy, then fine. Show me a great FPS on Sony, or even a good FPS that isn’t on a MS system and I’d consider it.
I have a Nintendo DS and love some of those games for handheld. No one can say the PSP has come anywhere close to success. We haven’t seen the greatly promissed Sony online (which they won’t even give a name), so maybe it will be all they promise for free, but Sony is famous for empty promises. “Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me!”
How about the Sony batteries making evenyone elses’ laptops blowup? Every battery I’ve heard of is Sony. Let’s not get into Betamax, mini-disc, memory stick, blu-ray, etc. Or how about all the horrible quotes from Sony bigwigs about PS3, or the pathetic E3? So, until Sony does something right, I think they will have to suffer the scorn they have brought on themselves as a company.
